The newest drug problem on campus....

Postby 70s_guy » Mon Jan 25, 2010 8:07 pm

...that you may know very little about. It's adderall and similar drugs that kids either have prescriptions for or buy from the kids with prescriptions. I find it incredibly hard to fathom how common these drugs are, how nonchalantly doctors prescribe these to kids, and how much frickin' money drug companies are making off of this fiasco. In fact, it's probably the drug companies that are really to blame. I am a prof on campus at Texas Tech and go to the gym every day. Numerous times I have overheard conversations about these drugs. I always join in and get lots of info. It's really very hard to believe the extent that this stuff is being used on campus, legally and illegally. How does this happen? When I was in college we smoked pot. It was and still is illegal. I don't get it.

Good post 70s guy,
I've heard of this drug, but didn't now much about it. I googled and found a lot of information.
If someone has a student in college they need to be aware of this problem. I'm glad you brought it up.
The affects of it can be very dangerous especially if someone doesn't know their medical history. Pot is probably bad enough and could have some long term affects if abused, but this one is much worse.
I'm sure it's synthetic, pot is an herb of sorts!!??!!
The people taking adderall should be very careful.
If you get to thinking you're a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else's dog around.

I wrote a response on this, tried to post it, and lost it, again, to a glitch in the wireless. (Dumbass for not copying as SOP for posting) Probably just as well. I was kind of intemperate. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

I swing toward the Firemall side on this one. There are powerful forces secretly at work here, and enquiring minds want to know.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of the alcohol and pharmeceutical companies getting together to sell us more of their products while keeping pot illegal. However, Perry's attempt to force HPV vaccinations on all female Texans after the age of 11 (or whenever), was tied more to the fact that his buddy worked for the company than that Perry wanted to protect female Texans. And, Perry is tied to Hance and the Board, so I think there might be a connection between pharmaceutical companies, Perry, and what happened to Leach.

We'll never know if no one looks into it.

This drug and similar drugs are very popular in high schools and has been for quite a while.
I didn't know about college kids but I would expect the same. In some ways there are more pressures on high school kids than on college kids.
The pressure on my granddaughter was extreme trying to finish high school a year early so she could go to the University of Texas with friends. She graduated but I feel she is not mature enough to handle the pressures of college. But I hope so. So far she's doing OK.
Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

I recall the HPV bs with Perry . Besides Perry wanting to play doctor & absent of Medical license to do so , Its was also obvious as a booger on a kids nose what was up with that crap between Perry & Merk Pharma..

Well, like pot, no one is dying from this drug, as far as I have seen.

Unlike pot, it isn't being used by filthy mexicans.

When I was teaching, I had had students who have found it useful, and friends who didn't like it. Same with pot, booze, acid, mushrooms, cactus, mdma, taurine, and caffine.

If college kids find it useful and it isn't killing them or motivating them to steal tools out of folks trucks to get it, then why should we be concerned that they are getting in another 6 hours of studying, beyond the questionable value of that study?

Pot is, I hear, also used by non-filthy Mexicans, filthy non-Mexicans, and non-filthy non-Mexicans.

Not sure that mj use correlates to anything in particular other than mj use.

PS: nice pic, CT. Nice plant. Is Arbor Day coming soon?
